REFLECTION: Mark 10:35-42 “Jesus came to serve!”
Jesus spoke clearly and on multiple occasions to his disciples about the need to
be humble and to serve others. It wasn’t empty speech. He himself came not to
be served but serve and to give his life to save many. He called his disciples also
to be servants, but they were slow to hear and were looking forward to being
served, rather than serving. James and John asked Jesus if they could have the
best seats in heaven, sitting with Jesus at his left and at his right.
Have you listened to what Jesus is saying about service?
Here is an outline of the message for this Sunday.
1. Jesus speaks of how he will serve - but no-one is listening.
a. See, the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and
they will condemn him to death (32-33
b. After three days, he will rise again (34)
2. The disciples dream of how they will be served.
a. James and John said to him, ‘Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask
of you.’ (35)
b. Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. (37)
3. Jesus sets them straight on service.
a. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I
am baptized with? (38)
b. Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant (43)
c. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a
ransom for many.’ (45)
To Think About:
How do you see yourself? Are you here to be served? Or are you here as one
who will humble themselves and serve others?
